On Tuesday, I was tagged by the awesome Raychel of raychelrose.com. She created the tag, “15 Things I Love About Being a Writer”, which is an awesome idea. I mean, what writer doesn’t want to talk about writing? Not me, that’s for sure.

So, I’m going to do my best to come up with 15 things I love about writing.

And that’s not hard.

1. Writing in my Head

I love this aspect of writing. My mind is curating ideas, gathering inspiration, and solving plot problems around the clock. It’s an endless cycle, and my daydreams are never boring because of it.

2. Characters

They’re an integral part of out stories, and when the story is through, out characters never really go away. I like to think that they retire to a special part of our brains. They become a part of us for some reason, and no matter how “finished” out stories are, their characters never disappear with them.

3. The Writing Process

Going through the writing process is an incredible thing. It’s almost an art; a thing of beauty. I love sharing that process with others, and teaching them how to write. (Enter “Writing Abby”.)

4. Accomplishment

I love the feeling I get when I finish a stage of the writing process. Whether it be planning, writing, editing, or sending off that first query letter, that feeling occurs just the same. It feels wonderful when you finish a project that big.

5. Themes

Looking back on my old manuscripts, I’ve noticed a common thread in my stories. Finding courage. It’s one of my main themes. I use it in one aspect, or another, in all my stories. It’s an insight into what I care about most, and it’s such an interesting facet of writing.

6. Brainstorming

It’s something to do on rainy afternoons, or on the too-hot-to-go-anywhere days. I love sitting on the porch, trying to fill plot holes while listening to the rain.

7. Plotting

The charts, the forms, finding new depths to stories, and that moment when everything falls into place. What’s not to like?

8. Friendships

I’ve met some incredible people because of writing. We’re in critique groups together, or attended a class, or met online. I’ve also deepened many existing relationships, simply because we were both writers.

9. Solving Problems

Love it. (Future Computer Scientist talking now.) As we all know, our writing can present some serious conundrums, especially when plotting. When you solve those problems, it gives you such a great feeling.

10. Knowledge

Once you write a story, chances are, you know a thing or two about writing. Anyone can learn how to write, because information on writing is so readily available. (Enter “Writing Abby” again.) That’s pretty cool.

11. Anyone Can Write

To build off my last point, anyone can write. Anyone can learn how to write, anyone can write a story, and anyone can share that story. That’s one of the reasons writing is so special.

12. Community

The writing community is such a helpful place. Everyone is welcoming and understanding. When you ask a question, you know someone will answer.

13. Teaching Others

Being a writer gives me an excellent opportunity — I get to teach others how to write, too. It’s a wonderful experience when someone you’ve taught falls in love with writing.

14. Expressing Myself

I’m now known for being chatty. I struggle for words. I lose focus, and forget what someone said. Writing is a way or me to say what I want, anytime. It still amazes me that someone listens.

Through Writing Abby, I can write like I talk. It’s a way for me to chat, without the potential of getting nervous and forgetting what I’m going to say. Through my writing, my books and stories, I can show off my word-smithing. My imagination. My characters. My worlds.

15. Service

When my writing, in some small way, connects with someone it makes me happy. Writing is my talent. It’s my passion. I love serving others through my writing. It’s a feeling that only grows with time.

And I hope it never ends.
